Like A Pixar Fanboy in Pixar HQ

Just a quick one. If you're noticed my latest Tweets in the sidebar, you'd know I'm in San Francisco. And visiting Pixar Animation Studios. To be among the first people in the world to watch their new movie Up. Together with the new short, Partly Cloudy. AND also to watch the new Toy Story 3 trailer!

And everything was just AWESOME.

And Pixar Studios was great. From the giant Luxo lamp outside; the Cars logo on the road leading into the car park; the silhouettes of Woody and Bo Peep on the toilet signs instead of the usual stick people; the models of Mike, Sully, Guido and Luigi greeting you at the entrance, and an actual flying remote controlled version of the flying house from Up (complete with balloons!)... I was like a kid in a candy store! I'd seen pictures of it in books before, but actually being there was just awesome. And the best part is, I'll be going back there for interviews and for a better look tomorrow, and I can't WAIT!

Oh, and Up was absolutely BRILLIANT. Heh heh. Not-Review later when I'm sure I can post it...

Awesome Alcoholic Blog Alert!

I haven't been checking out new blogs for a LOOOONG time, since.... well, a very long time ago. But here's a blog you REALLY should check out, especially if you have a fondness for all liquids alcoholic...

Deep's pretty new in the blogging world, but he's certainly not a stranger in the writing world (he used to be a writer with Weekender). And boy can he drink A LOT. Was with him and gang last night at the launch of Sid's Pub 2 just down my road, and the fella just kept guzzling Guinness after Guinness after Guinness...

Anyway, go check out the blog if you're interested in drinking (alcohol). He's got reviews of Absinthe in the latest post, funny stories about getting bitten by a drunk friend, and other drunken adventures. And it's funny as hell.

Simply put, this would have been the blog me and FA would have come up with if we didn't have day jobs and could drink for a living, or as much as Deep does. So go check it out!

The Old Star Trek Is Dead. May The New Star Trek Live Long And Prosper.

Star Trek
Not a Review.
Or Star Trek Begins.
Or Star Trek Returns.
Or Star Trek 11: The Future Begins.
Or Star Trek Salvation.
Or Star Trek Episode 11: The Romulan Menace
Yes I made those up.
But they could all be true! (Yes, even the Star Wars one)

Because this is Star Trek for the Star Wars generation.
Awesome space battles!
Planetary distruction!
Lots of action!
Lots of explosions!
Lots of aliens!
Pointless Red Suit Death Scenes!
Funky cool spaceships!

So how is the new crew?
New Kirk = Great! And Not The Shat.
New Spock = Nice ears, Sylar!
New Bones = Channeling Old Bones
New Uhura = Hot! No Cleavage rating.
New Sulu = Awesome sword!
New Scotty = Funny!
New Chekov! = Wery wery witty!
New Enterprise = Shiny!

Oooh Jennifer Morrison.
And Winona Ryder!
Eric Bana!
And isn't that the Galvatron guy?
And eh, got Cloverfield monster also?
And Ewoks!
(Ok, it's just that ONE alien that looks like an Ewok...)

I was never a big fan of Star Trek.
But this new movie is pretty damn good.
Not so much pointless walking around and talking,
And certainly no hunts for damn whales.
The Old Trek Is Dead
Along with TNG, Voyager, DS9 etc etc.
May the New Trek prosper at the box office,
And live long enough to make more movies.

This Is What Heaven Looks Like...

... in Peter Jackson's adaptation of Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones, to be exact (picture and post headline shamelessly stolen from Empire's caption...)

I'm quite curious to see how this film turns out, especially since I quite liked the book (I remember 'reviewing' it on a now defunct internet radio station with Erna once). It's got elements of a murder mystery, a ghost story, a love story, and even some fantasy thrown in at the same time. Perfect fodder for Peter Jackson? We'll see.

And if you're not done with PJ yet, you can hop on over to Empire to check out him and Guillermo Del Toro talk about the their plans for BOTH MOVIES that will make up the Lord of The Rings 4: There And Back Again (a.k.a. The Hobbit)!.

RIP: J.G. Ballard, Dystopic Crasher, Survivor of the Empire of The Sun

J.G. Ballard

If you don't know who J.G. Ballard is, you haven't been reading enough books. Or at least, you haven't been watching enough movies. Remember THIS?

Yes, that's a very, VERY young Batman, way before he became a foul-mouthed light technician-berating John Connor. (That's Christian Bale, to all you pop culture noobs out there).

I remember watching Empire of The Sun in the CINEMA (yes, I'm old) way back in the 80's, when I was a little kid. I was what, 10, and together with my big sister and my younger brother, we were the only three people in the Rex cinema in Mentakab watching this movie. And to this day, I can still remember almsot every single moment in the movie, from the protein-rich bugs in the rice, to the Hershey bars (real or otherwise).

While I have yet to read the book (yes yes, shame on me etc etc), I DO have it in my library (at least I think I do), and hope to read it er... soon.

As of now, rest in peace, J.G. Ballard, dystopic writer and survivor of the Empire of The Sun.

MUSICLARITY: Jiwang Tuesday #11 (The One With Sheila Yang Lagenda)

Sheila Majid memang lagenda.
Dia bukan saja ada lagu Lagenda,
Lagu Lagenda tu cerita pasal satu lagenda jugak!
Best kan?
Sapa Lagenda tu? P. Ramlee lar.
Bukan Ramlee Burger lar woi.
Walaupun Ramly Burger juga suatu lagenda,
P. Ramlee tu, lagenda yang memang satu-satunya saja.
Mawi, Awie, Sawi... semua kenot fight.
Gua ingat itu Ali Baba Bujang Lapuk,
Walaupun tengok beribu-ribu kali kat itu RTM1 (Dulu takde Astro...)
Gua masih ketawa sampai perut sakit.
Sheila Majid punya lagu Lagenda tak lucu langsung.
Tapi lagunya memang best.
Best macam itu Burger Ramlee.
Yum Yum.

Acquisitions: Sheila Majid - Lagenda

Kiddy Book Movies Make Pretty Good Posters

This year there seems to be quite a number of movies based on kiddy books. And they've got some really nice posters I wouldn't mind hanging on my walls...

There's Coraline, of course

And then there's these awesome posters for Spike Jonez's Where The Wild Things Are:

Go check out the trailer for this movie. It gives you a nice warm fuzzy feeling inside. :-)

Then again, the Harry Potter ones are the usual unimaginative ones with each of the cast just standing there doing nothing, in poses that is supposed to look 'cool' kononnya...

That said, Emma Watson IS growing up to be quite the hottie...

The List of Transformers In Transformers 2!

It's been too long since I've posted anything on Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen; apart from that hot hot hot picture of Megan Fox on the new Empire cover.

Let's correct that. But I saw the trailer again recently on the BIG SCREEN, and the hype really is starting to build. Anyway, this may be old news to those of you who follow the news on the movie religiously, but in case you've not seen this before, here is a pretty much official list of the Transformers that will be appearing in the new movie, and some kickass photos collected from all over the Net as well!

And also, check out THIS WEBSITE for really cool footage of the Autobots in vehicle form!

  • Optimus Prime
  • Ironhide
  • Ratchet
  • Bumblebee (Chevrolet Camaro)
  • Arcee (Motorcycle)
  • Jetfire (SR71 Blackbird jet)
  • Jolt (Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid)
  • Sideswipe (Chevrolet Corvette Concept)
  • Skid & Mudflap, a.k.a. The Twins (Chevrolet Beat and Trax concept cars)

  • The Fallen (One of the original Transformers)
  • Starscream
  • Scorponok
  • Sideways (Audi R8)
  • Soundwave (Cybertronian jet)
  • Ravage
  • The Doctor (a spider-like droid that transforms into various implements of torture)
  • Wheelie (small, radio-controlled truck)
  • Demolisher: One of the Constructicons that transform into construction vehicles
  • Devastator: A giant robot formed by the Constructicons joining together; individually, they are: Scavenger, Scrapper, Hightower, Longhaul, Rampage, Overload and Mixmaster.

My thoughts? I think the Autobot cars look DAMN KICKASS, especially Sideswipe (that footage in the GM website of ALL the Autobots together is damn cool), though I'm not too sure about the inclusion of Arcee in the mix though.

I DO have a problem with the Decepticons though - I mean, Wheelie? Really? Soundwave is a welcome addition even if he's not a cassette player, and so is Ravage. The Sideways car looks awesome, and of course there's DEVASTATOR, which pretty much trumps EVERYTHING else.

And what about Megatron, Jazz and Barricade? Are they coming back in this movie or not?

Jackie Chan is the Worse Triad Boss EVAR

Shinjuku Incident.
Not a review.
Not a typical Jackie Chan movie either.
I mean, he doesn't jump off a building.
Or slide down a pole filled with electric lights.
Or fight bad guys with a chair.
Not even once.

Oh, he DOES fight bad guys,
But very lousily, no kungfu at all also.
He does chop people's hands off,
And shoots people at point blank range.
But come on lar, those aren't Jackie Chan moves.
Even that annoying smug-faced Forbidden Kingdom kid could do those!

Anyway, this was supposed to be Jackie Chan's 'gangster' movie.
Yeah, it's bloody violent.
Yeah, got all the parang chopping people scenes.
Yes, got the obligatory "Tai Ko Leading the gang" scene.
Yes, got the customary triad war scene.
But in the end a bit anti-climatic.

Because he's the most wishy-washy gangster EVAR.
Imagine a typical Jackie Chan character,
Yes, the usual goody goody accidental hero,
PRETENDING to be a Gu Wat Zai gangster.
Very the tak ngam.
Not just the face, but the character also.
He's the worse triad boss EVAR.
Eric Tsang would SQUEAK him to death.

And check out Daniel Wu's Harajuku outfit.
Fooh, really look like pondan only.
You sure he's not gay ar?
But then his character very the cham lor.
Haiyor, and damn unlucky also.
Poor guy.
Doesn't excuse the lousy fashion sense though.

I really like that Fan Bing Bing chick though.
Donno why that silly Jackie prefers the other chick.
And the Jap gangsters?
Why they all talk like they are making a speech wan?
Even the policeman also liddat.

It's a very serious movie.
Hardly a single laugh anywhere.
It's not BAD. Just not GOOD either.
It's neither here nor there.
And Jackie Chan seems like he was crowbarred into the movie.
I wish he'd taken a bigger risk with his character,
And REALLY let loose on being a REAL badass gangster.
Now THAT would be a movie I'd PAY to watch.
