Give Me Absolute and Give Me Death!

No, this is not a post about vodka. It's about BOOKS. Yes, BOOKS. HAs it REALLY been that long since I posted about books, until you've forgotten this is (originally) meant to be a book blog? Siggghhh..

Anyway, I have so far managed to resist buying the Absolute Sandman books, even though they are unbelievably and absolutely gorgeous and I would LOVE to have the. But I didn't get them, because not only are they fucking expensive, I also already have the entire set of Sandman graphic novels. And one of them is even signed by Gaiman himself.

But when I read THIS on @neilhimself...
Todd Klein is making sure that the Absolute Death this november will indeed be absolute: LINK....
...I knew I was a goner.

You see, I may have read both The High Cost Of Living and Time Of Your Life, but I don't OWN either TP. Oh, I DO have the single issues of High Cost Of Living, but I'm keeping them nicely wrapped up and sealed, so no reading that, nuh uh.

So, an Absolute Death volume with BOTH Death stories in them would be freaking PERFECT for me. WOOHOO!

Checking out Todd Klein's website, it seems he's re-lettering the entire High Cost Of Living story for the Absolute edition, and it's looking fiiiine so far. Go check it out at THIS LINK!

Here's a sample of a reinked panel...

Woohoo! Give me Absolute and Give me DEATTTH!!!!

Project Reverse Earth Hour (a.k.a. Eyeris Syiok Sendiri)

I'm currently sitting here in the dark, typing this post by vanilla-scented candlelight. Why? Because I'm embarking on one of the stupidest missions this blog has ever conceived - to do a REVERSE Earth Hour by going from midnight to midnight without turning on the lights... except during Earth Hour.

You see, while everyone is all hyped up about turning OFF their lights at 8:30pm-9:30pm, I'M planning to go the entire day WITHOUT lights, and THEN turn them ALL ON at 8:30-9:30pm, just to spite you all... MUAHAHAHAHA!

Ok, so it's a rather silly idea, but I must say, not having the lights on in my apartment is pretty cool. I still have my laptop and my fans on though... hey, Earth Hour is about turning off your LIGHTS only right? Heh.

I figure I can go through the day without turning a single light on (I tried it today, after opening all the windows and curtains, I had enough sunlight coming in that I didn't need to turn on a single light). The night is gonna be trickier though... so I decided to buy a whole bunch of tealights from IKEA, and light up the house using that. So far so good, I haven't walked into any walls yet...

Keep a look out for the Tweet feed on my sidebar for updates on how Project Reverse Earth Hour is going tomorrow! Until the next update, Goodnight!

Viva La Coldplay Indeed

What, Coldplay?
Of course it was awesome.
Better even than the last one.
But I've had enough of writing about it.
Go read about it HERE instead.
Or go read Reta's account.
Here's a picture of my fucking expensive program book, courtesy of Reta.

Viva Le SGD25.

Be Gentle, I'm a Twitter Noob

If some of you have noticed, I have this new segment on my sidebar called Eye Tweet, which basically does what it says. Yes, in line with my policy of only getting into things a year after everyone else, I finally got myself a Twitter account. Unfortunately, 'eyeris' and 'eyeriz' were already taken, so I had to settle with not one, not two, but THREE 'zzz's at the back of the 'eyeri'.

Yes, that means my Twitter account is @eyerizzz. Makes me sound sleepier than I usually am. Go add it already.

I'm still getting the hang of it though, and though I can see the appeal, I'm not sure I can see the usefulness yet. I mean, do you really NEED to know what I'm doing all the time? Haha. No, don't answer that. You might hurt my feelings. For all I know, I might be annoying quite a few of my followers with MY Tweets as well, since I've been following certain people for a couple of days and have already been annoyed by the sheer quantity of mundane Tweets they can sometimes come up with. Time to start filtering them out.... heh heh.

Being a noob at it, I'm still stuck in FB-verse where all my 'status updates' are still grammatically correct sentences stating with 'Eyeris is...'. (I've been updating it via Ping.fm, which updates my Facebook AND my Twitter at the same time. Used to do it through Plurk, but changed after being called a noob by Suanie. :-( ).

But I digress. I now only have 24 followers. I need more. Or else how to compete with @neilhimself, who is closing in on 100000 followers and even has a Twitter competition up to celebrate it!

Now excuse me while I go figure out what the heck that '#' sign is for....

Earth Hour IS A Fucking Publicity Stunt

All you fellas pledging to turn off your fucking lights for ONE FUCKING HOUR on Saturday to kononnya show how 'environmentally friendly' you are because you're 'making a difference' by saving energy', go take a look around your house and tell me...
  • How many air-conditioning units do you have, and how long do you keep EACH OF THEM on for?
  • How many of your lights are still those energy-guzzling incandescent bulbs?
  • How many of your lights do you keep on even when no one is in the room?
  • How many electrical appliances do you leave on standby mode for the entire day (TV, Astro, PC etc)
  • How many plastic bags do you use each time you go grocery shopping?
Participating in Earth Hour doesn't make you a fucking environmentally-friendly saint, you fools. At best, it'll save SOME energy, which will then be guzzled up ten times over by that air-conditioning unit you keep running in your bedroom even when you're not in it.

So yes, OF COURSE Earth Hour is a fucking publicity stunt. Creating awareness through the publicity it generates is all it's good for, since it does fuck all in the long-run in terms of actual energy conservation.

Unfortunately, everyone and their donkey seems to be so taken in taking part in it, so much so that as Suanie says, sooner or later Hallmark will be making greeting cards for it.

Now, if only all these people stopped pretending they're doing something by flipping that switch off for an hour a YEAR; and started doing SOMETHING sustainable that actually helps save energy all year round... now imagine how much energy THAT would save.

Duffy The Vampish Singer

THAT voice.
It was absolutely fabulous.
Ok, it may be a bit nasal (ok, VERY nasal in some parts),
But when all you can do is listen to her voice,
Whether it was being raised to the skies,
Or lowered to to almost a hush,
You just could not ignore it.
I even forgot there was a band playing behind her at times.
She looks like Dolly Parton in real life (without the boobs, of course)
And that little schoolgirl miniskirt was oh so adorable.
She may have been a bit kayu on stage at times,
But when you have a voice like that,
Who needs to dance, eh?
And for a 'New Amy',
She dances and struts a whole lot better than the real Amy...

Complicated Sonic Battles Madness

I went.

I saw.

I was dumbstruck.

I was fascinated by how different each of the four band members were.

The one with the frizzy hair who played keyboards/guitar/laptop/Chipmunkvoice, looked like Matt Stone, and had some weird jerky shakey nerdy movements when he played his instruments.

The one with the bubblegum who was like this huge frat boy slacker ambling around fiddling with stuff, drinking beer and playing the guitar and keyboard at the same time.

The one sitting between the drums with his cymbals perched REALLY FUCKING HIGH and didn't seem to stop drumming even when the other four were doing nothing but stare at him drumming.

The quiet one out back who didn't seem like he had any emotions and just played quietly all night while fiddling with that huge fucking mass of sound equipment at the back.

All so different, all seemingly operating independently of one another, but when the strange sounds they all made came together, it was this AMAZING wall of sound that somehow gelled together and somehow became a freaking awesome song.

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

MUSICLARITY: Eyeris' Concert Overload Weekend!

This is shaping up to be one hell of a week, I tell you. You see, I'll be attending not one, not two, but FOUR CONCERTS AND GIGS altogether, starting tomorrow, all the way until Monday.

Which gigs? WEll, let me elaborate more, in a purely non-gloating sort of way (yeah right)...

--------------------------------------------

First up, it' gonna be Battles at 8pm Thursday at Orange Club, Jalan Kia Peng!

IF you never heard of Battles (and apparently most Malaysians haven't or the gig would be sold out by now), they're an indie dance-electronica/ experimental-rock/ math-rock/weird-shit band with some really funky songs, and some Chipmunk-like vocals. Now, I'm usually not a big fan of bands like this (nor the Chipmunk effect), but damn, that bloody Atlas song keeps getting stuck in my head...

Besides, their Mirrored album was voted one of 2007's best albums, so it should be worth checking out. And we don't get many good indie gigs down here, and to make sure we DO get more, lets all go support, yar? Tickets are RM88 a pop, and if Battles isn't your thing, there's always Twilight Action Girl afterwards...

Acquisitions: Battles - Atlas

--------------------------------------

After a day's break, it's then gonna be SUNBURST on Saturday! Sure, it ain't the Coldplaysnowpatrolkillers kaiserchiefskingsofleon extravaganza we were all hoping for, but at least there's Korn and Erykah Badu, and for you Hip-Hop freaks there's H.E.R.D., I mean... N.E.R.D. as well.

I'm hoping that the Sunburst All-Day Groupie Outing will still happen, though if I can't get enough kaki, I'll just settle for going at night to catch the main acts only.

Acquisition: KoRn - Freak On A Leash

--------------------------------------

After the all-day/nighter that is Sunburst, I'll then be hopping on a bus to Singkapor first thing in the morning, and after what will probably be more than a couple of beers with Fireangel, I'll then be heading to the Singapore Indoor Stadium to watch DUFFY.

Hey, say what you like about all the hype, her over-nasal-ly voice, her resemblance to a certain Miss Winehouse, and the 'rivalry' with Adele; I really like Duffy (duff name and all).

And since she's only had one album so far, which I've heard over and over again, I'm expecting to hear most of my favorite songs from her, especially Distant Dreamer, Warwick Avenue, and of course, the un-leave-out-able Mercy.

Acquisition: Duffy - Live And Let Die

--------------------------------------

I won't be expecting the same treatment for the final concert (for now) I'm going to the next day, on MONDAY night in Sillypore though. After all, these guys have FOUR albums, and a whole lot more hits than Miss Duffy.

Oh yeah, I'd be happy just to hear Fix You live again, but I'm not holding my breath.

What? Who? But of course. I'm talking about COLDPLAY.

Screw Sunburst, who put all their eggs into this Coldplay basket and ended up with nothing but a lot of hot air. I'll be going for Coldplay's Singapore gig instead, and the best part is, I don't have to pay an arm and a leg for the tickets. In fact, I only had to pay for ONE of the four gigs I've mentioned here. WOOHOO!

Damn, I love my job. Now someone get me some Oasis and Rachael Yamagata tickets already...

Acquisitions: Coldplay - Yellow (Live Acoustic @ Jo Whiley Lunchtime Social)

DISCLAIMER: All the mp3s available here are for sampling purposes only. So don't be an irresponsible pirate - if you really like the songs, be sure to buy the album also, ok? BTW, if you have a problem with the mp3s I've listed on the blog and want me to take them down, please email me at eyeriz@gmail.com, and I'll remove it at once.

Take a Gambit on Some New Wolverine Character Shots!

Awesome.... new character pics of Wolverine's new mutants!

And here they are, courtesy of USA Today (Click the link HERE for the bio and history behind the characters in the movie...):

Ok, we get it. You've got claws. Stop showing them off in EVERY SINGLE BLOODY PICTURE already.

Oh dear... As if hardcore X-Men fanboys didn't have enough of fangirls swooning over the COMIC Gambit already...

THAT'S Deadpool? Where's his mask?

I kinda liked the first one better, though Sabretooth looks a lot smarter than the wrestler one in the first X-Men. Well, as long as they don't go down the "Wolvie... I AM your father.." path, it should be good I guess.

Oooh hot. Does she take her kit off?

Love Matters Not If You Are Neither Here Nor There

Love Matters
幸福万岁
Not a Review.
Not very good either.
Even by Jack Neo standards.
At least I No Stupid and Money No Enough were FUNNY.
This one tried TOO hard to be funny,
And tried too hard to be serious at the same time.
And ended up being neither here nor there.

The old guy reminds me of Ricky Hui though.
That trademark hangdog and very cham expression.
Though his whining really got on my nerves.
His wife reminds me of Sylvia Chang.
Kinda like that Aces Go Places Cop Wife character.
Chai Poh!!!

The younger girls quite cute though.
Especially that Jennifer chick.
No cleavage rating though.
Eh she plays a schoolgirl lar.
Wear the blue pinafore and all samore.
Ahhh those were the days...

The two Malaysian DJs not bad either.
The guy did quite well I thought.
Looked a bit hamsap samore. Hahahaha.
Though we got to see a BIT too much of his bare flesh.
BUEK!
The girl... was ok as well.
Though she didn't need to do as much as the guy.
And didn't show enough flesh. Hur hur.

Ok lah, for half-Malaysian production.
Just the story all over the place wan.
Donno whether they wanna make it a drama or comedy.
The gigolo with all his madam madam was damn funny though.
And got some good funny lines also.
But most of the time it wasn't THAT funny lor.
And the drama drama was a bit annoying lor.
Like, get on with it already.
And for a movie about sex, sex and sex,
We don't get to see much sex also.
Sien...

The Sound Of Construction (by The Bangladeshi Happy Happy Hold Hands Construction Site Band)

The Sound Of Construction

Music by: Simon & Garfunkel (sung to the tune of The Sound of Silence)
Lyrics by: Eyeris
Performed by: The Bangladeshi Happy Happy Hold Hands Construction Site Band
(band name coined by Twilight Action Girl's DJ Ribut!)

Hello brightness, my old friend
I've woken up to you again
'Cause while I was happily sleeping,
Outside my home there grew a mighty din.
And the tension, that was planted in my brain
Still remains.
Thanks to the sound... of construction.

And restlessly I woke alone
Used my pillow like a headphone.
'Neath the pillow I hear a Chinaman,
Shouting out to his Indon workmen.
Then my ears were stabbed by the crash of a wooden plank
That hit the deck...
Thus are the sounds... of construction.

And in the morning light I saw
About fifty people, maybe more
People climbing up the scaffolding,
People walking about hammering.
People making sounds so noisy, you cannot bear.
But no one cared.
'Cause that's the sound... of construction.

"Fuck," said I, "I do not know.
How much longer this will go.
Hear the sounds that will annoy you,
Hear the noise that will irritate you"
But I prayed, that monsoon rain will fall...
And drown out.... the sounds... of construction.

And the people worked all day
On the apartment they'll make.
And the hammers kept on hammering...
On the walls that it was forming.
And the sign said, "Another proud project of the UOA group is being built,
And it's 20 floors..."
So I suffered... in the sounds... of construction....

Acquisitions: Simon & Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence (acoustic version)

DISCLAIMER: All the mp3s available here are for sampling purposes only. So don't be an irresponsible pirate - if you really like the songs, be sure to buy the album also, ok? Dragonball Should be Called Crapandballs instead.

Dragonball: Evolution
Not a Review.
Don't waste your money.
Don't even waste time blogging about it to get into the free screening.
Go read the manga instead.
Or at least watch the anime.
Because this movie made me wanna throw a kamehameha on the director's ass.
Kthxbai.

What, you're still here?
Ok, fine.
It should have been called Drag-on-balls,
Or Crap-N-Balls instead.
Because it SUCKS.
Thank god I didn't watch Street Fighter,
(Which apparently was worse than Dragonball)
Or I'd be killing myself with a Dhalsim action figure now.

First of all, whose idea was it to have a gwailo playing Goku?
It's almost as bad as that Forbidden Kingdom smug-faced kid,
And that smart-assed American kid in The Seeker.
Another classic example of American miscasting foreign characters,
To make them more Duh-merican.
And Yumcha was just annoying.
And that Piccolo... Oh dear oh dear.
Poor Spike.
He really couldn't find any decent jobs after Buffy ended huh?

And Chow Yuen Fatt...
Actually I have no problems with him.
Jsut the CHARACTER of Master Roshi.
Where's the turtle shell?
And what's this half-assed attempt at trying to make him more hamsap,
And then not doing it anymore?
Roshi is supposed to be more CRAZY PERVERTED,
Not some Mr. Miyagi-type sifu.
Bah.

And Emmy Rossum... what were you thinking?
Yes, got cleavage... (6, if you're wondering)
But the whole image is so bad,
She should have just hid herself in a capsule for the entire movie.
And that Chi Chi chick (huh huh see what I did there?)...
Ok, quite hot lar. Cleavage rating 7.5.
Very cute. Not very good acting though.
But very cute.
So cute that I'll put another picture of her just for posterity.

Sigh...
The Dragonball manga was sooooo FUN.
So funny and so FUN
(Until he grew up and all that super saiyan shit started, of course)
This movie is... just crap.
Speed Racer, Godzilla, and now this.
What other Japanese thing are they gonan ruin next?
Dr. Slump with Dakota Fanning as Arale?
Slam Dunk with Dennis Rodman as Hanamichi?
(that would be pretty ironic though...)
Astroboy? G-Force? Voltron?
Avatar, directed by M. Night Shyamalan?
Eh wait, those last few actually ARE happening.
OH CRAP-N-BALLS...

Rachael Visits a Cold Oasis of Battling Chiefs

I've complained about Singapore getting all the good concerts so many times here that it's not even funny anymore. So here's all the concerts they'll be getting in THESE TWO MONTHS, which is more than WE get in one fucking YEAR.

Coldplay - 23 March (seen them live already so I'm not bitter about NOT paying SGD180 for mosh pit tickets. I AM upset that Mercury Rev is playing a ONE HOUR opening set though. GRRRRR)

Oasis - 5 April (seen them live already so I'm not bitter about not seeing Liam Gallagher try to sing and giving up halfway to go grab a pint)

Kaiser Chiefs - 7 April (Not THAT big a fan so I'm not bitter about not seing them)

Rachael Yamagata - April 15 (Ok, fuck this shit. I missed the last time she came here, so I'm going for THIS one.)

And that's just the full concerts. I haven't even factored in Of Montreal, Psapp, Cinematic Orchestra, and Battles in Mosaic yet. Bah.

Oh wait, Battles will be in KL too. Awesome. And we got Mogwai too. And there's Sunburst too (ok, no snowpatrolkaiserchiefskingsofleon but we have jagung and badu). Oklah, I don't feel so bitter anymore. No wait, I still am. Bitter I mean.

I'm not bitter about not being able to see these shows. No really, I'm not. It's just that if they were playing in Malaysia, I'd have a higher chance of seeing them live... for FREE. MUAHAHAHAA. Oh well, I'll stick to just free movies for now then....

Heeeeerrrreee'ssss Johnny And Wolvie For All You Girls

Yeah, for all you girls who drooled as he took THAT bloody gratuitous shower scene in Australia, and swooned as when he hosted the Oscars, here's more Hugh Jackman goodness for you, courtesy of a new French poster and three new movie stills (courtesy of Xmenfilms.net)...:

And for those who prefer your men less ripped and more dapper, heeeeerrreeeee'sssss JOHNNY!

I Saw The Sawmen. I Looked The Lookmen. I Watched The Watchmen.

Watchmen.
Not a Review.
Yes, I watched it!
And I didn't even look at my watch!
So watch out for it!
Because it's worth watching!
Ok, enough using the word 'watch'.
(Hey, can I say I saw the Sawmen instead?)

Anyway.
Let's get the nitpicking out of the way first.
Ozymandias doesn't look WISE enough to be the smartest man in the world
35? Wasn't it supposed to be 25?
Eh, that line wasn't in the book...
Oi, where'd Holly Mason disappear to?
And where's the GIANT SQUID!!!!!

Ok, now that we've got THAT out of the way...
Watchmen is... well, Watchmen.
There really isn't any other way to describe it.
It's like the entire graphic novel,
Is being played out right in front of your eyes.
Every line, almost every panel, every flashback,
All there.

Ok, they took out A LOT of it.
Changed the costumes, and the ending...
But the main story and story structure is all the same.
Even follows the chronology of the entire graphic novel,
Down to when the flashbacks occur,
When the lines are said,
Even all the way down to every 'Hrmm' that Rorschach mutters.

Oh yeah, Rorschach = Awesome!
The Comedian = Brilliant!
Nite Owl = Pudgy!
Silk Spectre = Cleavage Rating 8.5!
Dr. Manhattan = Blurry blue bits!
Ozymandias = erm... too young, not wise enough.

Music's awesome though.
Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix...
Even SOUNDS OF SILENCE, WTF!
Never heard Simon & Garfunkel in a movie before.
Except The Graduate, of course.
And that last song was by My Chemical Romance, BTW.
Originally by Bob Dylan.
Just so you know. Heh.

Anyway, if you DIDN'T read the comic,
You might be a bit bored.
Because it IS very talky, and slightly complicated.
It's also rather slow in parts, and very long,
(2 hours 45 minutes long, in case you were wondering)
I suspet the average Malaysian moviegoer wouldn't like it.
Hey, if you want lots of action and lots of explosions,
This is the wrong movie for you.
This is a movie full of IDEAS.
So go watch it... and use your brain for once can or not?

If you liked the Watchmen graphic novel,
Then you'll like this as well.
LIKE it, not LOVE it, mind you.
It's hard NOT to like it though, if you're a fan already.
Especially if you've read AND loved the book.
Unless of course, you're an anal-retentive film snob,
With too superior a mind to settle for mere 'pop culture'
Go grovel before Alan Moore and kiss his hairy feet lah you.

As for the rest of you....
Go read the fucking book already, ok?
